Nestled amid the striking red rocks outside St. George, Utah, you'll find the shimmering oasis of Quail Creek Reservoir. This lake was born out of necessity - to support a booming city.
Back in the mid-1980s, St. George was growing faster than a coyote in rabbit season. New neighborhoods with names like "Dixie View Estates" were popping up left and right. The city desperately needed a reliable water source for this growth spurt.
After securing funding, work began on the Quail Creek Dam project. Bulldozers rumbled in, displacing quails from their native habitat. By 1989, the reservoir was complete with an initial capacity of 25,000 acre-feet.
Over the next thirty years, the reservoir was expanded twice to nearly double its size. Quail Creek Reservoir now provides water to almost 100,000 St. George residents. It's also a popular spot for boating, fishing and birdwatching.
Today, Quail Creek Reservoir stands as a life source for St. George, and a glistening gem in the desert landscape. Thirty years later, it's hard to imagine the city without this vital oasis.
When you visit, pause to reflect on the ingenuity and determination that brought this reservoir to life. The planners had to secure funding, choose the right location, and design it to withstand the desert climate.
The contractors labored to excavate millions of cubic yards of earth and construct the rockfill dam. Workers laid miles of pipeline to transport water to the growing city below.
Through this ambitious undertaking, the vision of a reservoir in the desert became a reality. Quail Creek Reservoir would provide a bounty of life-giving water for generations to come.
Next time you boat, fish, or birdwatch on the tranquil blue waters, think about the effort required to create this oasis. Let it be a reminder that even the most ambitious goals can be achieved with proper planning, funding, and grit. Quail Creek stands as a testament to what people can do when confronted with a vital need.
